BRINEY TOOL

Briney is an ISO 9001:2008 certified Michigan based privately-owned corporation with a dedicated commitment to quality from the corporate executives, managing staff, and the entire highly-skilled and experienced work force. Briney operates two shifts and employs approx. 100 people, all committed to serving the American machining industry and the world market. Briney uses the "Quality Team" manufacturing philosophy, along with 5S Lean Manufacturing philosophy implementing the best ideas from all levels of the company, thus producing quality products and new innovative manufacturing ideas and tooling designs.

SELECTION

Look to Briney for a complete line of toolholders in Shrink-Fit or conventional styles for your CNC machining center or your manual milling machine: CAT Shank 40, 50: BT Shank 30, 40, 50: NMTB(QC) Shank 30, 40, 50: HSK 63 A,C,E, and 100 A,C, and Collet Chuck and Shrink-Fit Extensions. Bilz Quick Change Tapping systems for all shank styles, and Jacobs Drill Chucks. TG, BR/ER, DA, and BF/AF, collets are available from stock in all the popular sizes.

Shank quality is the key to machining accuracy. Briney shanks and bores are ground on state-of-the-art CNC grinding equipment, enabling Briney to provide the most accurate shank and concentricity in the industry. All shanks are traverse-ground to AT3 ANSI tolerance (.001 taper per ft.) and inspected with the latest, most accurate air/electronic dedicated gaging system. Toolholder I.D.s (collet chuck tapers, end mill adapters, etc.) are traverse-ground on CNC ID grinders under simulated operating conditions.

This enables Briney to offer size repeatability and concentricity of .0002 or less from the tool shank to the bore. All grinding operations are closely monitored to ensure the highest quality and consistency in the industry.

The result of these quality features is superior performance, longer tool life, increased speeds and feed rates and better surface finish resulting in lower operating costs.

Materials used for all Briney Tooling are certified and traceable to NIST standards. With in-plant heat treating, Briney controls the carbonizing and hardening process to ensure all tools have a .050 minimum case depth to maximize tool life and reduce distortion from prolonged use, mishaps, and mishandling.

Shanks are ground after black-oxide to guarantee the best concentricity, superior finish, and better spindle contact.

The critical grinding process is the last operation. This eliminates any distortion by heat treating or changing surface conditions of the tool. These conditions will affect the concentricity or cause the tool to be difficult for your tool changer to operate. Both deeper case hardening and superior shank accuracy extend tool life, providing superior quality and superior value.

BRUBAKER TOOL

Those familiar with Brubaker end mills know just how important quality is to the 116-year-old cutting tool manufacturer. After all, this is a company whose products are so well-respected that it is authorized to ship both taps and end mills directly into McDonnell Douglas Corporation's inventory. Brubaker has one of the industry's model quality assurance programs, one that has been recognized by companies like Ford, Caterpillar and GE. Each has presented the supplier with quality awards or special status.

Brubaker has implemented many internal programs to assure high quality. For instance, the firm's Statistical Process Control Program is well under way. SPC takes time to install company-wide, but its results are already evident. Not only has our SPC won us recognition from customers and distributors, but it has allowed us to improve production and on-time delivery while reducing our error rates significantly.

Brubaker made its mark in the industry with its end mills. At one time, taps were a minor part of our product line. Today, we produce large volumes of high-quality taps and end mills, and provide them at competitive prices.

Brubaker has increased production capacity for taps by expanding plant facilities and adding state-of-the-art equipment. As a result, the company currently offers one of the world's largest selection of taps, with choice of styles that includes standard machine screw taps, hand taps, and spiral-pointed taps; as well as metric sizes and various surface finish treatments. EASOM

Easom today is a combination of two businesses that both started in 1945. George Easom started a business named Easom Engineering Co. that provided engineering design and detailing services to tool builders in the greater Detroit area. Jack Haines Company also started in 1945 in garage shop providing detail-machining services to machine tool builders. Both start up companies serviced the large and small tool builders in Detroit´s machine automation market. Easom offered engineering services while Jack Haines Company machined small parts.

The two companies operated separately until 1983 when Easom Engineering began to contract Jack Haines Company to manufacture their patented indexing device call a Cymonic Drive. Jack Haines Company had developed a very special planetary transmission that the automobile manufactures used in their manufacturing / final assembly plants.

The companies remained independent until Jack Haines Company was purchased by the Besl family from ERG Industries in 2000. The Besl family had purchased Easom Engineering in 1996. Jack Haines Company was merged with Easom Engineering and Manufacturing Co. in 2001 and became Easom.

A close working relationship with a large machine tool builder, Snyder Corporation, presented Easom with an opportunity in the mid 1970´s that set a successful course that the company has followed since. Snyder had a need for a mechanical indexing device to compete with the F. J. Lamb Company. Easom designed a unique indexing drive package that used a combination of planetary gears and harmonic cranks to generate a variable output motion used to index parts quickly and accurately from work station to work station, the Cymonic Drive Unit.

Cymonic drive units were sold and manufactured for major system manufactures like Comau Pico, DCT, Key Welder, Kuka, Paslin, Valiant, and others during the 1990´s. Business philosophies of these tool builders began to change in the late 90´s. They downsized their engineering staffs and looked to smaller companies like Easom Engineering to provide more that just the index drive unit. They wanted to purchase more complete sub systems. This presented Easom an opportunity to expand their scope of supply.

During the late 1990´s Easom began developing Automation Systems that provided more than just the Cymonic indexing drive unit for the stamping and final assembly operations for Ford, Chrysler, and GM. Easom began offering to provide larger system components to the large OEM´s. These items included lift tables, weld tables, 4 post weld presses, open center station lifters, 7th axis robot slides, tooling trays, and complete lift and transfer units. Several of the devices were unique application solutions and patents were granted.

Today Easom works closely with the end users of their products to offer cost effective and reliable solutions for ever changing manufacturing process. Relationships with Ford Vehicle Operations, Daimler Chrysler Tech Center, and General Motors Tech Center provide opportunities to get an early look at new plant manufacturing processes, offer solutions, and have Easom products specified to Tier I tool builders. Easom is known for its robust / reliable products, engineering skills, and problem solving capabilities.

KENNAMETAL

Innovation, perseverance and close attention to customer needs have characterized Kennametal since its founding. In 1938, after years of research, metallurgist Philip M. McKenna created a tungsten-titanium carbide alloy for cutting tools that provided a productivity breakthrough in the machining of steel. "Kennametal®" tools cut faster and lasted longer, and thereby facilitated metalworking in products from automobiles to airliners to machinery. With his invention, Philip started the McKenna Metals Company in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Later renamed Kennametal, the corporation has become a world leader in the metalworking industry and remains headquartered in Latrobe.

McKenna Metal's first full-year sales, with a staff of 12 employees, totaled some $30,000. But World War II saw American heavy industry shift into high gear. Kennametal's annual sales approached $10 million and employment was nearly 900 as the company's tools were used extensively in the war-time economy.

When the wartime boom ended, Kennametal sought new ways to exploit the toughness and wear resistance of tungsten carbide alloys. In the mid-1940s, the company pioneered the use of carbide tooling for mining, which led to the development of the continuous mining machine. Kennametal also found uses for tungsten carbide in demanding specialty applications where resistance to wear was vital, such as in valves, dies, drill bits and snowplow blades.

Global Growth

Kennametal developed an international presence from the start. Philip sold early patent rights to British industrialists who later also began Kennametal of Canada. Exports through the company's first five years totaled more than $2.5 million, and by 1955 Kennametal had representation in 19 countries. The company's overseas manufacturing started in 1957 with a joint venture in Italy. A joint venture in the United Kingdom and a German sales subsidiary soon followed. Between 1972 and 1981, foreign sales grew from 17 to 34 percent of the total.

In 1993, Kennametal acquired Hertel AG, a tooling systems manufacturer headquartered in Fürth, Germany, with operations throughout Europe and worldwide. This enabled the corporation to compete more effectively in Western Europe, gain better access to emerging markets in Eastern Europe, and offer additional product lines in Asia Pacific. The Asia Pacific effort was further expanded to include manufacturing joint ventures for mining tools in China and a metalworking tool manufacturing plant in Shanghai. In 2002, Kennametal acquired Widia, a leading manufacturer and marketer of metalworking tools in Europe and India. Other acquisitions that expand Kennametal’s capabilities to better serve its customers worldwide include Conforma Clad Inc., a leading provider of engineered components that deliver premium wear solutions, and Extrude Hone Corporation, a supplier of market leading engineered component process technology.

A Technological Leader

Kennametal was founded on the strength of a technological breakthrough, and a list of highlights demonstrates that it has continued to lead its industry in innovation.

  • In 1946, the company introduced the Kendex line of mechanically held, indexable insert systems that accelerated tool changing and increased machining precision.
  • Kennametal's unique, patented thermit process for producing impact-resistant macrocrystalline tungsten carbide today remains the best way to produce extremely tough tool materials for demanding applications such as mining.
  • In 1964, Kennametal introduced tungsten-carbide-tipped Kengrip tire studs. Although studs clearly contributed to safe winter travel, they became controversial amid speculation about their role in road deterioration. After legislation limited the use of carbide studs, Kennametal left the business in 1977.
  • Leader in the development of silicon-nitride based "sialon" ceramics for the machining of exotic aerospace materials.
  • First to develop cobalt-enriched substrates for coated inserts, was first to commercially introduce physical-vapor-deposition (PVD) coated cemented carbide cutting tools and created the first commercially viable diamond-coated carbide inserts.
  • Leader in the development of quick-change tooling systems that today lead the world in versatility, speed and accuracy.

Kennametal maintains its technological leadership through its $30-million Technology Center at its world and North America headquarters in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and complementary facilities in various locations around the globe. The facilities are dedicated to rapid development of products engineered to meet specific customer requirements.

Kennametal has been named a four-time best-practice partner for excellence in our world-class product development and portfolio management processes by the APQC, a non-profit organization and internationally recognized leader in benchmarking, knowledge management, measurement and quality programs.

LEMPCO

Lempco is an internationally recognized manufacturer of die sets and guidance systems for the metal stamping industry. Long recognized as the standard for excellence in the industry, and known for their extremely high quality and reliability, Lempco's die set products are in demand worldwide.

Lempco Industries began as Lake Erie Metal Products Company in 1917 when Mr. James F. Strnad started a small machine shop to work on government projects during World War I. Following the war, the company found an ever growing demand for automobile replacement axles. From this beginning, the product line expanded to include a wide variety of Industrial products distributed throughout the United States and foreign countries.

During World War II, Lempco developed the “Hypermatic Press”. It was used to manufacture defense products and ran at a high speed, capable of producing 7,200 pieces per minute or 3,456,000 pieces per eight hour shift.

The incomparable speed of the Hypermatic Press required a die set design which no one before envisioned. Lempco introduced its patented ball bearing die set in 1945. From this time forward, the stamping industry would never be the same.

The innovative ball bearing guidance system offers both stampers and die makers the following advantages over the common plain bearing system:

Registers the die more accurately providing precision parts, longer die life and less maintenance.

Ease of assembly or disassembly of the punch holder and die holder providing higher precision dies and reduced die building time.

Longer stamping runs (millions of strokes) providing less maintenance down time.

Minimizes replacement of guidance components.

In 1963, Lempco introduced the unique “Lempcoloy” plain bearing lubrication free bushing. It has qualities far above those of steel, bronze, or bronze plated bushings:

High tensile strength with glass-hard wear-resistance.

Extremely low coefficient of friction.

No lubrication required (This product is used widely by the food processing industry).

Dielectric (Facilitates EDM machining).

Excellent thermal conductivity.

Corrosion resistant.

Lempcoloy® self-lubricating bushings, standard and short shoulder, are available in 10 sizes starting with 1/2" inside diameter thru 3".

In 1987, continuing with its pioneering and innovative philosophy, Lempco introduced the Rotainer®, a multi-directional action guidance system to rotate as well as move vertically on the post. The Rotainer® possesses increased resistance to normal wear, is unaffected by high speed operation and offers precise die registration.

At the end of December 2003, Connell Limited Partnership, a Boston based manufacturer of industrial equipment acquired Lempco. Connell's wholly owned businesses include Yuba Heat Transfer and Anchor Danly.

Lempco has proven experience in selecting metals, developing designs, and understanding the details of customer needs to ensure you receive cost-effective performance run after run. Lempco knows what it takes to keep you competitive today, and will continue to strive to keep you competitive into the next millennium.

MORSE CUTTING TOOLS

Morse Cutting Tools began with the ideas of one man. From his ideas a company grew to become the leader in the design and manufacture of metal cutting tools. A firm's history plays an important role in shaping its present operation. This brief history outlines Morse's growth from the early 1800s to the present.

Stephen A. Morse, an enterprising mechanic, developed a new and better way to drill a hole when he invented the twist drill. With a new patent and a stockholder investment of $30,000, he opened the Morse Twist Drill and Machine Company in New Bedford Massachusetts in 1864.

Recognizing the need for a way to drive his twist drill, Morse created the taper shank series. Two sets of master gages were made up; one, sent to the Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., was accepted as a National Standard. The other remains with the Morse company. Differences with his board caused Morse to resign in 1868.

Philadelphia's 1877 Centennial Exhibition showcased the first exhibition of Morse tools. Morse products gained an international reputation for quality and were sold throughout the United States and in England, Russia and Germany.

In the latter part of the nineteenth century, the company began a pattern of acquisition which resulted in enormous growth. Morse took over the Manhattan Fire Arms Company of Newark, New Jersey and the American Standard Tool Company of Danbury, Connecticut. Morse also acquired the Beach chuck patent of the Meridan Tool Company, Meridan, Connecticut, and the Schofield Patent Grinding Line, helping to insure accuracy in drill grinding.

In 1874, Morse purchased the machinery, patents and stock of the New York Tap and Die Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1897, Morse purchased the T & B Tool Company. T & B's machines, used in the manufacture of constant angle twist drills, were designed by a former Morse employee who had gone into business for himself and were built by Pratt and Whitney.

Entering the twentieth century, Morse developed a grinding machine used in the manufacture of drills. Until the beginning of World War I, the company marketed a line of plain and universal grinders. Business continued to grow between the wars, and during World War II, Morse output increased four to five times normal production to contribute to the war effort.

In the years since World War II, Morse has operated under the ownership of a number of companies, including Gulf+Western. The current owners, a group of American investors, purchased the company from a Scottish manufacturing concern, and are committed to upholding the Morse reputation for high-quality, American-made cutting tools.

Today, Morse Inventories over 25,000 varieties of cutting tools to serve our nation's marketplace. Imagination, technological innovation and insistence on quality are built into every Morse product. And at Morse, our people wouldn't have it any other way.

NOVOTEC

In 1988, NOVOTEC emerged as a trading house for EDM supplies from Techno Tools,
specialists in graphite machining. We quickly realized that our customers expected more
expertise and know-how from us than simple trade and commerce would allow.
To better respond to the needs of our customers, we have included the design and
manufacture of our own products whenever possible.

To be able to act with competence and personal service, local partnerships were set up
strategically across Europe, Asia and the United States. In parallel with our sales efforts,
in-house product engineering, fabrication and quality assurance divisions for wear parts
were also incorporated. In 1999 we successfully introduced an EDM-drill that is designed
to comply with our philosophies of quality and performance. With the addition of EDM wire
fabrication in 2000, we are able to service and support an even larger number of
private-label-customers.

In keeping with our philosophies of quality and competence, we will continue to be
responsive in expanding our in-house fabrication lines and to customer service through
our local distribution partners.

Electrical Discharge Machining is a very precise and demanding process. Any product required for the operation of an EDM must demonstrate high quality standards.Understanding this demand for quality, many of these products can be manufactured with the know-how obtained from many years of hands-on EDM experience. NOVOTEC has this technical expertise from extensive experience in the manufacture of these products and from a regular and intensive exchange of information and interaction between the Sales and Production divisions.

We conceive each one of our products ourselves, while maintaining a product philosophy of “quality first”. The largest portion of our products we manufacture in our own production facilities or we can offer youproducts from noted and reputable manufacturers like Mann & Hummel, Poco, Tokai-Carbon, etc..

We have developed our sales organization with a demand for product knowledge and high competency reflecting the same levels of our manufacturing skills. NOVOTEC products are sold exclusively only through NOVOTEC partners or dealers who have been selected with care and trained in NOVOTEC philosophy.

Before our products are available to be sold, they are first subjected to extensive testing and quality control. After successful inspection and approval, these products receive the well-known NOVOTEC packaging - your direct guarantee of quality and authenticity. ROHM

Röhm can look back on a diverse and successful company history.  For 90 years, the company has continuously developed itself into one of the best-performing chucking tool manufacturers all over the world. Today, Röhm is setting new standards in the production of all types of chucking tools from the smallest drill chuck to the most modern and high-tech special design. This achievement principally redounds to the credit of the company's founder, Heinrich Röhm Sen (1882 - 1957) and his three sons Helmut (1908 - 1980), Heinrich and Günter. Heinrich Röhm's desire for independence prompted him to set up his own company in the town of Zella-Mehlis in Thuringia in 1909. From modest beginnings with 12 employees, he started manufacturing two-jaw drill chucks.

The business prospered until production was ceased in the First World War. Manufacturing restarted at the end of the war. The number of employees rose over the following years to 1400 and, even then, the company was one of the most productive and modern Europe. Heinrich Röhm and his family were evaluated to Heidenheim on the River Brenz in the aftermath of the Second World War. The moved to Sontheim in 1946 where their factory was rebuilt and continuously expanded over the following years.

A branch was set up in Dillingen on the Danube River in 1953. Today, this plant is principally concerned with the design and production of lathe chucks, machine vices and special designs. This firm is currently managed by Georg Röhm, a grandson of the company's founder. The firm underwent continuous expansion in the form of a plant outside Europe in Sao Paulo (Brazil) as well as numerous branches in the most important industrialized nations of the world. Röhm chucking tools have gained an excellent reputation for themselves thanks to their precision, quality, and economic efficiency, and are used all over the world.

Nowadays, the decisive impetus is supplied by Heinrich Peter Röhm and Bernd Röhm. The company possesses the necessary experience and forward-looking approach with which to win over customers all over the world, in particular with new products.
Röhm currently employs about 1,500 people.

The Main Plant in Sontheim/Brenz

Sontheim lies on the Brenz River, close to the Bavarian border between Ulm and Heidenheim. This town on the edge of the "Swabian Alps" has a population of 5000 and can boast both a highly developed infrastructure and a rich cultural heritage. Sontheim has undergone huge changes over the past few decades. The character of the town is now principally determined by industry, skilled trades and commerce. Transport links are extremely favorable thanks to the Ulm to Aalen main line, very good trunk roads and the nearby A8 and A7 motorways. In this place, our company has developed into one of the best performing chucking tool manufacturers in Europe and has become one of the leading lights in our industry.

Constant innovation and forward looking developments manufactured on the most up-to-date, computer controlled machines mean that Röhm chucking tools are of the highest possible quality standard.

New building:
In autumn '99 we started with the construction of a 7800 m2 production and assembly plant.

Donau Plant

The branch plant set up at Dillingen in 1953, Röhm Tool GmbH & Co. KG. underwent positive development. New production halls were built in 1982 and 1991. Experienced specialists are employed here, principally in the design and production of lathe chucks, machine vises and special chucking tools for turning machines, milling machines and machining centers.
Recently, the Dillingen plant presented a hydraulically operated 6-jaw chuck with a diameter of 2300 mm.
Georg Röhm manages the company since 1963. Particular emphasis is placed on training at the Dillingen plant, where almost 250 people are employed. The QA system was successfully audited by the TÜV Management Service in May 1999 as part of the composite certification program.

SUPER TOOL

In 1927 Conrad Birgbauer founded Super Tool, a company that directly accelerated the nation’s electronics industry and helped pave the way for America to become an industrial giant. Birgbauer recognized the industry’s need for quality tooling that could perform well under the toughest manufacturing conditions. Consequently he used a new metal compound called “carbide” to produce metal power tools that would retain their cutting edge at tremendously high temperatures and perform well against extremely hard cutting surfaces.

In essence, super industrial power tools.

The first Super Tool customers were automotive firms, particularly Chrysler and Ford corporations, who required a reliable industrial tool equipment supply. Expansion led to more extensive tooling and the clientele list grew, adding Caterpillar Tractor and International Harvestor, helping Super Tool retain its leadership as the top industrial cutting tools supplier. Van Norman Industries purchased Super Tool in 1955 and initiated an aggressive research and development program, which resulted in a superior system of cutting technology designed to advance the miniaturization program of the electronics industry. A major breakthrough was the design and production of standard solid carbide miniature drills having diameters as low as .0065. Possibilities for industrial cutting tools grew and Super Tool expanded its product line to provide American industry with a wide selection of carbide cutting tools.

In 1962 Van Norman merged and became Universal American. The Super Tool marketing program was expanded to a nationwide basis. 1968 saw the takeover of Universal American by Gulf and Western, making Super Tool a division of G&W Manufacturing Industries until 1984 when Jim Lambert purchased the company in conjunction with Morse Cutting Tools. The main office and manufacturing facilities were located in Elk Rapids, Michigan.

In June of 1988, Super Tool was purchased by Dennis Lemkau. In 1991 the firm was purchase by its present owner and moved to Bradenton, Florida where its product line of top-quality industrial power tools was expanded and the manufacturing process refined.

Super Tool Remains an Industrial Power Player.

Today Super Tool manufactures solid carbide, carbide tipped, as well as high speed steel cutting tools, supplying the automotive, aerospace, and metalworking industries. The factory is over 10,000 square feet with 27 full time employees and 104 machines. There are now several warehouses around the United States to ensure the fastest deliveries possible. WELDON

Weldon Tool Company can lay claim to many firsts. Our Weldon shank was the first straight shank with a locking drive flat. And our Crest-Kut® end mill was the first to be designed for both roughing and finishing. But it wasn't these firsts alone that put Weldon at the top. Being consistent has been the real key to our success. Consistent in outstanding quality. Prompt delivery. And timely technical support. That's what customer's remember. And at Weldon, we never forget it. Being first to develop a new product is important. But being first in the minds of our customers is even more so.

In the beginning . . .

Carl A. Bergstrom founded The Weldon Tool Company in February, 1918. Back then, in a loft atop the old Blackstone Building in downtown Cleveland, the company was just a two-man machine shop.

Weldon's contributions to the cutting tool industry are well documented. And the firm's history is filled with new product developments that have shaped the industry we know today. Carl Bergstrom believed that using a straight-fluted end mill was not the best method for removing metal so he developed the first helical end mill with flutes of 30 degrees. To compensate for "pull out" forces, and to drive his new end mill, he subsequently developed the Weldon straight shank with a drive flat. This product, known as the Weldon Shank, is accepted today as the industry standard. Its design an tolerances still serve as guides to both end mill users and manufacturers, as well as the American National Standards Institute.

The Ultra-Kut® high performance tap offering from Weldon goes beyond what is usual and ordinary in high performance tapping. This line of taps was specifically engineered to eliminate confusion and field testing in H limits to obtain a Class 2B or 3B fit with a proven tap geometry for specific materials and applications. Our innovations applied to the taps, combined with application specific geometry, heat treatment and surface treatments, result in better thread finishes, maximum tool life and greatly improved tapping performance. Taps are available in materials including stainless steels, nickel alloys, cast iron, titanium alloys, and all types of steel applications. The styles available in ANSI standard inch and metric sizes include spiral point spiral flute, straight flute and form taps for use in blind or through hole tapping. Diameters range from machine screw size number 4 to 3 quarter inch and M-4 To M-24.

Now a whole new generation of Weldon customers has come along. To serve this new breed, as well as our long-standing customers, we will provide insights into the latest developments in cutting tool technology. We will also offer application tips that can help you increase the productivity of your metal cutting operations.

Weldon's innovations didn't occur by accident. They were the result of skilled people using state-of-the-art materials, processes and equipment. A combination of traditional craftsmanship and today's CNC technology. When you do business with Weldon, you don't just get a cutting tool. You get an entire company that stands behind every product it sells.
